Starting July 1, 2025, Indian Railways implemented a wide-ranging revamp of its ticketing system to boost transparency, curb fraud, and offer passengers greater clarity and convenience.
🛂 Aadhaar Authentication for Tatkal Begins
Only Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users can now book Tatkal tickets online. To enforce this, travelers must link their Aadhaar to their IRCTC account. From July 15, Aadhaar‑based OTP verification is mandatory not only for online bookings but also for those made at counters and through authorised agents.
⏰ Agent Booking Restrictions During Priority Window
Tatkal booking opens at 10:00 a.m. for AC and 11:00 a.m. for non-AC classes. Agents are barred from booking in the first 30 minutes: 10:00–10:30 a.m. for AC and 11:00–11:30 a.m. for non-AC tickets. Verified individual users get preferential access during this window.
🗓️ Reservation Chart Prepared Eight Hours in Advance
Instead of the previous four-hour policy, reservation charts for long-distance trains will now be ready eight hours before departure. For early-morning trains (before 2 p.m.), charts will be prepared at 9:00 p.m. the previous day, providing more time to confirm waitlist status or arrange alternatives.
🪙 Increase in Fare per Kilometer
Ticket fares have seen a modest increase: non-AC classes by 1 paisa/km, and AC classes by 2 paise/km. This change affects mail and express trains—and applies to services like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Tejas, and Hamsafar. No changes were made to reservation or ancillary charges.
⚙️ Passenger Reservation System (PRS) Upgrade Coming
A new, more powerful PRS is scheduled to be rolled out by December 2025. The upgraded system will support up to 150,000 bookings per minute—a nearly fivefold jump—and process up to 4 million inquiries per minute, compared to 400,000 previously.

🍃 Why It Matters
These reforms aim to democratize Tatkal booking by prioritizing genuine travelers over scalpers and bots. Early chart preparation allows waitlisted passengers more time to adjust plans. While fare hikes are limited, the revenue boost is projected to strengthen infrastructure funding. The enhanced PRS will also ensure smoother booking and enquiry flows during peak periods.
